Fair Housing Education Requirements

Michigan & NAR Fair Housing Requirements

Fair housing compliance is a foundational responsibility for real estate professionals in Michigan. State laws are grounded in the federal Fair Housing Act and reinforced by Michigan statutes, including the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and the Persons with Disabilities Civil Rights Act. These laws prohibit discrimination in the sale, rental, financing, and marketing of housing and establish protected classes under both federal and state law.

All Michigan real estate licensees are required to complete one hour of State Fair Housing continuing education each licensing year, following the annual license renewal cycle. This ensures licensees remain up to date with evolving laws and compliance standards.

In addition, members of the National Association of REALTORS® must complete two hours of National Fair Housing and anti-bias training during each three-year Code of Ethics cycle, beginning January 1, 2025. This is separate from Code of Ethics training and reinforces NAR’s commitment to promoting equal housing opportunity and professional accountability nationwide.

Together, Michigan’s annual CE requirement and NAR’s cycle-based training ensure that real estate professionals maintain both legal compliance and ethical responsibility in their practice.
