The City of Ypsilanti is currently considering enacting an ordinance that would prohibit housing providers from conducting ANY type of criminal background checks as part of a tenant screening process, even for offenses such as arson or serious violent crimes. We had urged them to take a more nuanced approach to limit this ban a bit, but the City Council rejected this idea.
Housing providers have a vested interest in protecting their property, residents, and neighbors. Removing the ability to screen potential tenants goes against one of their most important responsibilities; ensuring the safety of their residents.
Tell the Ypsilanti City Council to vote NO on this misguided proposal before they take a final vote on this proposal.
